About this event

Introducing youth to fundamental STEM concepts with a mix of workshops targeting youth in grades 5th-8th. These sessions will be facilitated as an open-house, drop-in experience designed to introduce AVELA’s programs to Renton area youth. Unlike AVELA’s standard class format, participants may come and go throughout the session, engaging with short, guided demos and hands-on activities.

AVELA will provide technology, instructional staff, and sample programming experiences to showcase course offerings and expand community access to emerging STEM tools. Engineering Mash- Extended/Mixed Reality, Arduino Robotics, BioBlend Activities, AI Bias & Apple Co-ML, AI Music & Python, and Climate Sustainability Activities. AVELA’s Engineering Mash program introduces students to a dynamic range of STEM topics through hands-on, project-based learning. Students explore drones, Arduino robotics, embedded systems, bioengineering labs, Python programming, AI music, Apple Co-ML, climate and sustainability, and mixed reality. Across the program, students build technical skills while experimenting with real-world tools and concepts such as sensors, circuits, machine learning, game-based AI, DNA extraction, enzyme kinetics, AR/VR design, 3D modeling, sustainable design, environmental engineering, and community-centered problem solving.

Activities are designed to be accessible and engaging while exposing students to advanced ideas shaping modern engineering, computing, biotechnology, sustainability, and creative technology fields. By connecting technical learning with creativity, teamwork, and real-world challenges like flooding, pollution, and energy insecurity, the course helps students explore multiple STEM pathways and build confidence in their ability to design, test, communicate, and present their own ideas.

Drop-ins are welcome, but we encourage pre-registration in advance as space is limited. Register with the FFCC front desk or online on MyActiveCenter .
