Mariners fans, meet your new skipper. Jason Kanzler was introduced Wednesday at T-Mobile Park as the club's 22nd manager. He's 36, the second-youngest manager in Major League Baseball, and he has never managed a pro team. He most recently ran player development for the Cubs after coaching for the Astros, including their 2022 World Series season.

The front office had said experience was preferred. General manager Justin Hollander said the Mariners first talked to Kanzler in 2021, and he called him their “white whale”. Jerry Dipoto said the search was “30 days-plus in the making.”

“I’m the right man because I believe that every player and every person can be better.”

Seattle's budget chair unveils a package that would add about $55.5 million to the mayor's plan

If you follow City Hall, this is budget crunch week. Councilmember Dan Strauss, the budget chair, released his “balancing package” Tuesday. It would net-add about $55.5 million to Mayor Katie Wilson's 2027-28 proposal amid a $175 million general fund hole. The Center Square got that figure from its own review of the package.

Wilson's $9.1 billion budget cut spending and proposed no new taxes. Strauss said it “unnecessarily took austere measures.” He said the council could use revenue from the county's recent sales tax increase, improved forecasts, an off-cycle payroll-tax payment and reduced reserve contributions.

  • Hearing: , Thursday
  • Other amendments due: Monday
  • Fire overtime restored: $14.2 million through 2028
  • Parking enforcement: $1.92 million for nine vacant jobs

An RV safe lot tops the listed additions beyond the mayor's budget at about $7.12 million

District transportation$7 million
Central District, Southeast$6.4 million
Gender-based violence$5 million

Not everything made the cut. Strauss said “There is little to no additional room for ongoing funding,” and he won't support any amendment that takes his plan out of balance, since several additions use one-time funds.

The package leaves out $12 million for police recruit hiring

Seahawks

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold will miss Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday. Darnold hurt his quad late in Monday night's 34-17 loss to the Bears and played through a cracked rib from the second play of the game. He'll be out for at least this week, with a chance he could play next week, and he won't go on injured reserve. The plan is for Drew Lock, who's been dealing with a right elbow injury, to start. Left tackle Charles Cross, defensive tackle Leonard Williams and receiver Rashid Shaheed, who missed Monday's game, “all have a chance to play,” Macdonald said. seahawks.comFOX 13 SeattleThe Seattle TimesSeattle Seahawks

The Wrap

Three weeks to make a short film sounds tight, but the Seattle University Filmmakers Club gave its filmmakers just under that. The theme for the Silver Scream Film Festival was "Killer Objects," announced Oct. 12, and the films screened Oct. 29 in Wyckoff Auditorium. The festival has been an annual tradition for almost a decade. Scary good effort.
